Wellbriety Treatment at Cypress Lake Recovery
At Cypress Lake Recovery, we embrace a holistic approach to addiction treatment. This means that we put a focus on healing the mind, body, and spirit from the harm of addiction.
One of the cornerstone ways we offer this is through our support of the Wellbriety movement, which integrates traditional Native American healing practices with therapeutic techniques to create a holistic path to recovery for indigenous people. This creates a more culturally relevant and effective substance abuse treatment program for the indigenous people of America. We are happy to serve the communities of the nearby Alabama–Coushatta Reservation, as well as anyone with Native American heritage who seeks a more well-rounded approach to recovering from alcohol and drug addiction.

What is Wellbriety?
Wellbriety embodies the journey to both sobriety and wellness, designed to speak within the context of addiction in Native American communities. It emphasizes the importance of living both “sober and well,” consistently working on behalf of one’s own wellness. For Native Americans, Wellbriety offers a unique cultural and spiritual perspective on the recovery journey, recontextualizing it in a way that can provide insight into what long-term recovery may mean and/or demand of an individual.
The principles of Wellbriety are designed to support and speak to the traditions of different nations, so non-local Native Americans can still receive help for alcoholism and drug abuse. At its core, the Wellbriety approach is not just about abstaining from substance use. It encourages individuals to engage in self-reflection, personal growth, and the development of healthy relationships.
Wellbriety recognizes that addiction is often intertwined with trauma, loss, and disconnection from one’s heritage, making cultural revitalization a vital component of recovery. These may include storytelling or drumming. Medicine wheel teachings serve as a foundation for the movement, transmitting wisdom about spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical health. The Medicine Wheel, also known as the sacred hoop, holds deep cultural significance for many nations as a symbol of personal and communal transformation.
By participating in culturally relevant activities, individuals can work to find strength and support within their tribal communities. Wellbriety often encourages mentorship and peer support, allowing individuals to share their experiences and learn from one another in a safe and nurturing environment. In addition to its focus on cultural practices, Wellbriety also addresses the broader social issues that contribute to addiction, such as poverty, discrimination, and intergenerational trauma. This multifaceted perspective can help individuals understand their struggles within a larger context, promoting resilience and hope for a brighter future.

The Principles of Wellbriety
The foundation of Wellbriety is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Medicine Wheel, which serves as a guide for achieving balance and harmony in all aspects of life. The Medicine Wheel evokes the four directions and represents the interconnectedness of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health. The 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous is given new purpose and definitions, with the intention of teaching it within a greater Native American context of addiction recovery.
At the heart of the Wellbriety program are the Four Laws of Change, which are as follows:
- Change is from within
- No vision, no development
- A great Learning must occur
- You must create a Healing Forest
By following these practices, participants can learn to address not only substance use but also the intergenerational trauma that often underlies addiction.
The Wellbriety philosophy encourages individuals to reconnect with their cultural roots, honor their ancestors, and restore balance in their lives. Through this holistic approach, the program empowers individuals to recover from drugs and alcohol addiction while fostering personal resilience, self-awareness, and a renewed sense of purpose.
The Red Road to Wellbriety
The Red Road to Wellbriety is a journey that draws upon the heritage and traditions of the indigenous people of America. Walking the Red Road means living in accordance with the principles of the Medicine Wheel, striving for balance, respect, and harmony with oneself, the community, and the natural world.
The journey is unique for each person, yet it is deeply rooted in community, shared values, and the collective spirit of indigenous strength. By walking the Red Road, individuals work to not only recover from substance use but also rediscover a sense of belonging, purpose, and meaning in their lives.

The program at Cypress Lake Recovery works! I emerged from an accumulation of unrecognized emotions, issues of trust, and unresolved grief and loss. 35-days of effective integration of customized quality therapy reconnected my mind, body, spirit, and I am worth it! I had masked emotions and hurtful events for decades with alcohol. At Cypress Lake Recovery I safely focused deep within to unleash harmful secrets and self-degradation. Tools of recovery were practiced, not just presented. Integrative therapies were tailored to my circumstances, thus were effective. This residential program is like no other. For me, Cypress Lake Recovery delivered what was professed. I am forever grateful for this gift of healing.

Benefits of Wellbriety Treatment
Wellbriety incorporates cultural practices that can resonate deeply with individuals, fostering a sense of identity and pride. Engaging in traditional ceremonies, storytelling, and even artistic expression can provide therapeutic outlets for emotions and experiences that may be difficult to articulate. This cultural connection can reinforce the importance of heritage and community to the individual.
One of the most significant advantages of the Wellbriety approach is its focus on holistic healing. By addressing the emotional, spiritual, and physical aspects of addiction, Native American individuals can work to build a more comprehensive and lasting recovery.
The integration of self-care within the Wellbriety framework encourages individuals to develop healthier coping mechanisms, ultimately leading to improved mental wellness and well-being. Participants learn to cultivate self-awareness, which can empower them to make better choices and navigate challenges with resilience.
Recovery is often a solitary journey, but participation in Wellbriety can help foster a sense of camaraderie among participants. Group sessions and community gatherings allow individuals to share their experiences, learn from one another, and build meaningful connections. This supportive environment can significantly enhance motivation and accountability, which are crucial for successful recovery.
The Wellbriety model encourages individuals to engage in service to others, reinforcing the idea that helping fellow community members can be a powerful tool in one’s own process. By contributing to the well-being of others, participants often find renewed purpose and a sense of belonging that strengthens their commitment to recovery. The Wellbriety approach often incorporates mentorship opportunities, where individuals can learn from elders or those who have successfully navigated their own recovery.

How the Medicine Wheel Works in Wellbriety
Central to the Wellbriety program at Cypress Lake is the use of the Medicine Wheel. The Medicine Wheel represents the four directions: East, South, West, and North. These directions are integral to understanding the Medicine Wheel’s teachings, as they symbolize different aspects of health, life’s cycles, and the recovery journey. Participants are encouraged to engage in activities such as drumming circles, sweat lodges, and storytelling sessions. These activities not only promote healing but also help individuals reconnect with their cultural identities, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose.
Participating in Wellbriety does not exclude other forms of addiction treatment that a Native American person can access at Cypress Lake Recovery. The four laws and four directions are taught in a way that works with other forms of alcohol and drug addiction treatment, contributing to the overall journey to wellness. People can still access services like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and family therapy that can help support their recovery from addiction. By blending treatments in a way that can benefit the individual, Cypress Lake Recovery provides a holistic treatment experience that addresses the unique needs of each individual.

Community and Support in Wellbriety
Within the Wellbriety program, participants are surrounded by others who understand the challenges of recovery and are committed to walking the journey together. The community is built on respect, compassion, and empathy, creating an atmosphere where everyone’s story is valued. By witnessing the progress of others, individuals are inspired to continue their own healing journey. The support found in the Wellbriety community often extends beyond the program itself, fostering lasting connections that help individuals stay sober and maintain their recovery over time. Through shared wisdom and collective strength, the Wellbriety community can help empower people to heal and thrive.
