It’s difficult to let your kids roam free when they reach a certain age.  They grow up and need to be let free from the den where they have stayed their whole life at this point.  But don’t just let them go all-together. Stay involved in their lives as much as possible because everyone goes through problems in life, and we sometimes need someone to be there for support, but sometimes we don’t know how to ask for help. This can be as simple as going out for coffee or breakfast and asking how they are doing and what’s going on in their lives.

Drugs and Alcohol

Your kids can get involved with drugs and alcohol at an early age, whether from peer pressure or a phase where they start picking it up.  It’s always good to stay encouraging with your kids, and even if they are in a tough situation with alcohol or drugs, it’s always good to be there for them.  It can be a difficult subject to bring up, and that is why it needs to be dealt with delicately.

Depression and Anxiety

Depression – a crippling situation in our society.  Many people deal with depression on the daily, and it’s important to acknowledge this. If you’re someone who hasn’t had depression, then understanding someone who does is very difficult. Talking to your kids if they’re in a depression or going through some tough times is very helpful. Let them do the talking and try and ask them if they want to get help because the most important thing is talking and attacking the problem at its core. We may never have felt the way they do, and that is why it’s crucial to have them be comfortable with you and a professional for help.

Anxiety – fear and worry can manifest itself from one occurrence in your life.  If it continues, then it can become very stressful and crippling to your mental health. It can feel like something is caving in slowly.  Your kids can have a case of anxiety or depression without you knowing it.  Sometimes it’s easier to mask the issue and put on an act for friends and family.  And this is why it’s good to be involved with your kids, family and friends.

When there is comfort in relationships and friendships, then it gets easier for your kids to confront you about their problems. Maybe they have thought about getting help from a professional like Cypress Lakes Lodge, but they haven’t been able to bring the subject up because of that fear and worry of judgement.
