Contemporary counselor supporting his teenage patient in trouble after sessionAs a family member or friend who knows someone struggling with addiction, we may not quite understand the entirety of what they’re going through. As an outsider, we need to make sure we have a good grasp on how addiction is stronger than we may think. Anyone who has NEVER smoked a cigarette before will sometimes say, “I don’t know why people struggle with quitting smoking. It smells bad, and it’s awful for your health.” Addiction doesn’t bow down to health issues, warning signs, or common sense. It takes hold of a person’s free will.

Besides tobacco and smoking cigarettes, drugs and alcohol addiction can have a different effect due to the difference of substances. Addiction runs its course a little differently, but with the same hold on someone’s life.

What is Addiction?

Addiction is a disease that happens when a use disorder arises from a compulsive state without fear of the harmful consequences. It’s a powerful disease of the brain that disregards your physical and mental health. If a person starts with substance abuse, it can easily turn into addiction. They have distorted thinking and body functions due to the power of addiction. Understanding this aspect as a loved one is important to get help for them.

You never want to downplay addiction when you’re not the one experiencing the pain. Being supportive and communicating your love for them is what is most important.

Know How They Feel
