Counseling

Amid the many modern and traditional treatment methods for addiction recovery, the foundation of any recovery program is its counseling and therapy options. Individual and group therapy provides the basis for our clients to explore their experiences with addiction and life’s other stressors and pressures that have led them to our doors.

In one-on-one sessions, our counselors strive to create a trusting relationship with each of our patients; without trust, patients will be unable to immerse themselves in the therapy experience fully and will continue to resist recovery. In group sessions, we create a safe and supportive environment where clients can feel comfortable sharing without fear of judgment or alienation. Everyone in our program is chasing the same goal of recovery — we are here to build each other up, not to make anyone feel like they have failed or done wrong.

We understand that each patient may walk into a recovery program apprehensive regarding treatment; addiction leads to isolation and mistrust. Many of our clients have had difficult experiences with loved ones or previous care providers who haven’t given them the support they were promised.

Since we at Cypress Lake Recovery stand by our mission to be compassionate and understanding, we want to welcome each patient individually from wherever they begin their recovery. Our role in the recovery process as counselors is to help our patients understand where addiction comes from, what it is, and what happens to them.

During these sessions, each patient will learn about the addictive mind and why these treatments are necessary to reverse the effects of addiction to drugs and alcohol.

Why Is Counseling So Essential to Recovery?

Counseling is a time-tested and proven ingredient in healing from addiction and substance abuse. The reason for this is that, at its root, addiction is a mental health concern. Your mind becomes programmed to crave drugs or alcohol, and this deep-seated desire may never disappear. To wake up every day and feel confident that you can say no to your addiction, you need to fortify your mind against the difficulties of daily life and the possibility of emotional distress in the future.

It’s very common for people to relapse after a breakup, the death of a loved one, or in times of heightened stress. Counseling helps you discover and identify the things that make you feel most powerfully drawn to drugs or alcohol and, in turn, lets you develop other ways to deal with these potential triggers.

Essentially, it’s not enough to simply “get sober” with a detox program. Your body needs to heal, but your mind needs to be strengthened to find sustainable recovery. Individual and group counseling is the piece of addiction recovery treatment that gives you the mental skills and tools to find fulfillment in daily life as a sober individual.

How Counseling Sessions Work at Cypress Lake Recovery

Our residential, intensive outpatient, and partial hospitalization recovery programs all integrate a range of counseling schedules customized to each patient’s needs. Our signature residential programs are typically our first recommendation, especially for patients that have not gone through addiction treatment before. Residential programs allow for full-time structure and stability so that all aspects of treatment can work together cohesively, meaning our clients get the most out of their counseling sessions and other treatments. Residential programs usually begin with a 30-day commitment, where, after medical detox, the program is focused on counseling, evidence-based therapy, and integrative treatments. These three avenues work harmoniously and build on one another for a well-rounded, holistic healing experience. Our patients use the topics they discuss in counseling to inform their other therapies and vice versa.

Following medical detox, we immediately begin with a comprehensive psychological assessment to learn about the patient and what treatments will benefit them the most. The first point we start with is the mutual understanding of why we are in therapy and recognizing that there is an addiction problem. Upon realizing that addiction exists, we work on explaining the unhealthy thought processes accompanying addiction. Patients will learn more about their substance abuse and why they think the way they do, realizing their thinking and reactions to external events is why they have had previous difficulty abstaining from substances.

Counseling Sets Recovery Goals

Unlike other recovery centers that often rely on open-ended counseling sessions, our counseling sessions are designed to make the most out of each of our patients’ sessions. Our counselors are experienced in identifying and covering essential topics and expertly guiding conversations while leaving room for personal exploration. Both group and individual counseling sessions are based on our patients’ needs and previously determined boundaries. Our counselors set goals during each meeting to guide and motivate patients to seek recovery from addiction in the long term. Cognitive conditioning begins here to retrain the addictive mind to want healthy, productive coping mechanisms, such as healthy habits and sober hobbies, instead of gravitating toward the temporary relief of being high or drunk. This will eventually allow every patient to control their actions, telling their body that they do not need these substances to function whenever cravings arise.

As each patient spends time with their paired counselor, we also provide recovery planning services. They may extend their counseling services within our aftercare programs as they adjust to independent life if needed or appropriate. This can be especially helpful for continuity of care. Often, patients are interested in continuing counseling after residential treatment, and it’s beneficial to stay with a counselor they already know and trust. Our aftercare programs provide patients with an extension of involved counseling well into their recovery as added support. Combined with our life skills and relapse prevention programs, our counselors help teach our patients how to live outside of our recovery center to maintain sobriety as they become increasingly independent.

Recovery is Possible, and Sustainable

We incorporate a holistic ideology throughout our treatment process, encouraging wellness of the mind, body, and spirit, and we want our patients to understand why we must heal each simultaneously. Holistic care allows us to treat addiction from all angles, helping our clients feel strong enough to sustain recovery as they continue living and challenging themselves with new experiences. Substance abuse and recovery counseling are designed to reduce our patients’ ambivalence as they experience various treatment modalities; it anchors everything they learn in recovery to a solid foundation. Counseling also provides them with a mindful approach to therapy to be consciously accountable for their actions and redirect their dependence on substances to a healthy, self-driven desire for wellness and abstinence.
